Research

Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) is considered as an interesting way to develop sustainable aquaculture activities. IMTA is based on associating different types of aquaculture production on the same area (e.g. finfish, algae, shellfish) using trophic links between them. It aims to reduce environmental impacts from aquaculture while increasing economic value to producers by adding additional products to the main product.

In the past two decades, many projects explored IMTA and its potential for associated characteristics, such as technical, economic, environmental and social aspects. The expansion of IMTA along coastlines, especially in Brittany, is promising, but needs to increase knowledge about interactions between the different activities involved and the environment. This information is essential to promote IMTA for professionals and other coastal stakeholders. To date, IMTA in the open sea has been little studied due to methodological difficulties and technical concerns related to such an open area. The objective of the AMIMA project is to review available methods for monitoring the marine environment in order to develop and test a monitoring method for IMTA. The method will be tested on the Trieux estuary because it hosts a variety of aquaculture activities.
