The PANDOR research team aims at developing and optimising processes and cascade of processes that improve the organic wastes and residues valorisation channels by promoting the recycling and recovery of the various elements that comprise them.

Our research mainly focuses on energy and agronomic recovery processes with the will to take to account for territories’ specificities in terms of resources and outlets.

The collaboration with the SAFIR research team ensures the environmental relevance of the proposed solutions according to the territorial context.

Research objectives

The main goals of our research team are to:

  • Characterize organic residues to understand their biodegradation
  • Develop innovative characterization tools to guide technological choices and estimate the valorisation potential of various components including carbon and nutrients
  • Understand the transformation and transfer mechanisms in biological processes for the valorisation of organic residues.

Multiple processes are central to our research projects:

  • Biodegradation of lignocellulosic materials for the valorisation of organic resources underexploited by anaerobic digestion for methane production (as solid manure or crop residues) (Precuteur)
  • Fermentation pathways for the development of recovery processes complementary to anaerobic digestion, such as biohythane production (BOOSTHYDRO), nutrient recycling (Phos4you) or specific organic molecules recovery.
  • Foam formation during anaerobic digestion processes (MATLAMOUSSE)
  • Anaerobic oxidation of ammonium (anammox) for the reduction of the economic impact of nitrogen removal
  • Microalgae growth on complex media for the valorisation of the liquid phase of digestates.  (BIOMSA)
  • GHG, ammoniac or odours formation and emissions during recovery processes to decrease the environmental impacts and increase the social acceptance of the technologies
  • Heat and mass transfer in recovery processes
  • Degradation of biodegradable plastiques during biowaste recovery by composting or anaerobic digestion

To optimize cascade processes and manage in regards to recovery purposes, the team develops and couples different biokinetic and biogeochemical models to predict the evolution of various compounds according to processes parameters during the different stages of the recovery pathways.

Scientific equipment

The PANDOR and SAFIR research teams rely on experimental set-ups to study the treatment and valorisation processes and cascade processes of organic wastes and residues. These experimental set-ups coupled to the various analytical equipment available allows the OPAALE Research Unit to be a key contributor to the Scientific Interest Group APIVALE.
