OPAALE Research Unit

Batiment OPAALE

UR 1466 OPAALE "Process optimisation in food, agriculture and the environment" is an INRAE Bretagne-Normandie Centre's own research unit, located in Rennes-Beauregard.
OPAALE's research activities aim to promote technological and organisational solutions for the valorisation of food materials, biomasses and waste. Our ambition is thus to develop an integrated approach for the design and evaluation of sustainable, innovative, or even alternative recovery processes at the territorial level.

Our scientific expertise is multidisciplinary: chemistry, physics, process engineering, NMR, MRI, image processing, fluid mechanics, automation, dynamic systems modelling, microbial ecology, sanitary microbiology, life cycle analysis, geomatics.
Our research focuses on three main areas:

Characterisation of the physical, chemical and biological properties of raw materials, products, residues and surrounding air flows;
    The development and optimisation of technological and digital solutions;
    The evaluation of the services offered by the technological sector and the environmental and health impacts.

The Phos4you project

P4Y, funded by the European Interreg NWE programme, takes up the Phosphorus challenge (P). It focuses on the recovery of P from wastewater. P is a necessary element for all living organisms. Although it is a limited resource, it is largely wasted today. There is an urgent need to recycle P.
