The growth in world aquaculture and the need to conserve natural marine resources means that changing the composition of food intended for farmed fish in favour of a mainly vegetable-based source, constitutes a priority. The aim of the AGREENFISH project is to encourage this food transition in a carnivorous species through genetic selection. By using lines of rainbow trout showing differences in their ability to survive and grow by consuming food composed of vegetable products completely free of raw materials of halieutic origin, we are researching the mechanisms that explain the ability to adapt to changes in food and we will identify the associated phenotypic, genomic and genetic markers. The integration of all the information will enable selection procedures to evolve in order  to encourage carnivorous species to adapt to vegetable food through genetic selection.
