SIBER’SEX Project

SIBER’SEX Project

The SIBER'SEX project (2018-2020, extended 2021), supported within the framework of the European Funds for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (FEAMP), associates three INRA laboratories (LPGP, SIGENAE and GETPLAGE), two private companies (STURGEON and L'ESTURGEONNIERE) and the French Association of Poultry and Aquaculture Breeders (SYSAAF)

The aim of this project is to understand sex determination of the Siberian Sturgeon (ZZ / ZW) and the characterization of its sexual locus, based on high-quality genome sequencing and different genomic approaches.  These results should allow the development of a reliable and efficient molecular sexing test to quickly and efficiently identify  ZW and WW females. These WW females would be a important resource for producing all-female Siberian sturgeon populations in aquaculture. The achievements of this project will be transferred and validated by the SYSAAF and STURGEON and L’ESTURGEONNIERE companies. These results will improve the competitiveness of the "caviar » production sector by facilitating the production of female monosex populations in this species and will also contribute to the development of resource for genetic or "genomics" selection programs in Siberian sturgeon.
