An integrated wheat breeding programme for sustainable agriculture in France

Wheat is the main arable crop in France, with about 5 million hectares cultivated and 38 million tons of annual production (first rank in European Union). Average yield of about 7 t/ha relies on the use of high levels of inputs like nitrogen fertilizers and pesticides. These inputs are expensive, energy demanding, sources of environmental pollution, potentially toxic residuals in food products and sources of greenhouse gas emissions. Environment and food safety concerns led citizens to ask for more sustainable crop production systems, while farmers and the wheat industry emphasize the necessity to maintain yield. Developping varieties with high yield in low(er) input cropping systems is a leverage to conciliate these opposite objectives. To take up this challenge, INRA has developped an integrated applied breeding programme aimed at developping highly productive varieties suited to low inputs farming systems. This project, which capitilizes on results from more basic research such as genomics and ecophysiology, is organised in 8 workpackages (WP).
