Improvement of the oil yield of the rapeseed crop in the context of bio fuel production

Improvement of the economic value of the rapeseed crop will rely on our ability i) to increase the oil yield, ii) to reduce nitrogen (N) input and iii) to improve oil extraction while preserving the availability and stability of by-products and saving energy during the extraction process. All these aspects are under investigations in GENERGY.

A multidisciplinary approach that combines modelling, plant physiology, quantitative genetics, functional genomics and technology, has been undertaken to study traits related to oil yield, nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) and oil extraction potential in Brassica napus. All studies are conducted with a large panel of genetic diversity and under two contrasted N regimes. GENERGY aims i) to obtain information on the genes/genomic regions critical for the establishment of the oil yield potential, ii) to study the effect of the “genotype * N” interactions on this potential, iii) to elaborate a comprehensive view of the carbon/nitrogen balance from the seed to the oil and iv) to improve oil extraction yield. This integrated view will help to improve the performance and the energetic balance of the OSR crop
