Research at IGEPP

The objective of the IGEPP research unit is to describe, understand and predict the functioning of plants, their associated organisms and the agro-ecosystems, in order to contribute to the improvement of new plant protection methods taking into account sustainability, respect for the environment, and low input utilisation.

IGEPP studies plant adaptation to their biotic and abiotic changing environment. Approaches range from molecular and genetic studies of plant and associated organisms adaptation, to the development of new sustainable methods for plant protection and culture.

Studies are performed:

  • over  a  wide  range  of  spatio-temporal  scales,  from  gene  regulation  to  species  community,  and from  in vitro experiments to landscape experimental designs
  • on different crops (oilseed rape, pea, potato, wheat) and legumes (carrot, pea, cauliflower, cabbage, beetroot)
  • for a diverse number of associated organisms (viruses, bacteria, fungi, oomycetes, nematodes, insects)

Expertise is diverse, covering genetics, genomics, cytogenetic, bioinformatics, biochemistry, plant physiology, population genetics, evolutionary biology, ecology, epidemiology, agronomy, statistics and modelling

  • Biodiversity and Polyploidy, whose aim is to maintain, describe and explore biodiversity in breeding programs

  • Ecology and Genetics of Insects, whose aim is to develop research on aphid and fly pests of arable and vegetable crops for understanding how they i) evolve in response to human-induced changes, ii) interact with biotic factors and iii) participate in trophic networks. This team also contributes to the development of durable control strategies based on decision making tools and integrated insect pest management
  • Resistance and Adaptation, whose aim is to develop research on plant – biagressors interactions to i) identify genetic factors for plant resistance or architecture limiting epidemics and understand plant response to infections in various biotic and abiotic environments; ii) assess the evolutionary processes of bioagressor populations and associated microbial communities and their adaptive response faced to the plant selective pressure; iii) understand the dynamics of epidemics at the field and agroecosystem scales.The team develops operational knowledge and tools for the implementation and deployment of resistant varieties aiming at monitoring the selection pressure on the bioagressor populations and durably controlling epidemics.
  • Yield under Abiotic Challenges, whose aim is to identify and characterize the genetic, molecular and physiological determinants that guarantee the stability of grain yield (quantity and quality) of rapeseed crop in conditions of low nitrogen inputs and water shortage.
  • Sustainable Novel Crop Material, whose aim is the creation of original plant material (parents and varieties) of winter bread wheat for an agriculture with less compsumtion in chemical inputs and thus more autonomous
