MOSADURUM

For mosaic resistant durum wheat varieties

Context

Wheat spindle streak mosaic and cereal mosaic are two extremely damaging diseases for the durum wheat crop in France. As no resistant variety is available, farmers are forced to abandon the cultivation of durum wheat in their fields where the virus is present. The re-conquest of the mosaic-infected area for durum wheat cultivation requires varietal research in order to make available a range of durably resistant varieties. This will put durum wheat back in the infected areas and give them more possibilities in their rotations. A wide choice of species to be cultivated remains a major objective in the agro-ecological transition and the possibility of having durably resistant varieties will also be a guarantee for the development of durum wheat in organic and conventional farming. 

Objectives

The project has three objectives, 3 research actions:

Action 1: Expand the natural genetic diversity by transferring resistance alleles present in bread wheat. A QTL of major resistance to spindle streak mosaic present in the majority of bread wheat varieties will be transferred into durum wheat through homoeologous recombination.

Action 2: To map more finely the QTLs of resistance to spindle streak mosaic and cereals already identified in two durum wheat varieties with low agronomic potential during previous collaborations between the partners (TRAM project and FSOV Mosaic) and to develop efficient markers for selection. The double resistance is a major issue for durum wheat cultivation. The project plans to conduct a complete experiment (agronomic potential, resistance) in the last year for the best lines identified, which could then be used as progenitors in breeding programs.

Action 3: Develop and use tools for viral diversity characterization in France. As very little is known about mosaic viruses, the description of viral diversity on the national territory appears to be essential for the deployment of resistant varieties according to the QTLs they will mobilize.
