Ph.D. Thesis : BIOdiversity and Multifunctionality supported by agroforestry hedges and Extensive agricultural practices at different scales (BIOMHE)

Context and issues

Biodiversity in agroforestry landscapes provides multiple functions, the preservation of which is a major issue. The suggested management strategies to promote them often target the maintenance/planting of agroforestry hedges, or the extensification of agricultural practices. The effects of these strategies are well documented for biodiversity but they are not well understood in terms of multifunctionality. It is unclear whether these strategies induce complementary effects on different forms of biodiversity and expected functions in landscapes.

Objectives

My PhD thesis aims to evaluate the complementarity of extensification of agricultural practices (Organic Agriculture versus Conventional) and bocage maintenance / restoration practices for groups of species associated with pest control, pollination and biodiversity conservation. In addition, a multi-scale approach will help to prioritize the role for these species of (i) habitat conditions provided by adjacent hedges and crops, (ii) the intensity of agricultural practices, and (iii) landscape patterns related to hedgerow networks and spatial heterogeneity related to organic farming. Finally, I will focus on identifying simplified descriptors of biodiversity and multifunctionality response to local and landscape factors whose practicality will be tested through partnerships with agroforestry sector actors.

 

This work will be carried out within the South of the "Zone Atelier Armorique".
